Hey guys, welcome back to the Purpose of Money podcast this week I'm super excited. I have special guest Dr. Kyla Lurry on the show. In 2013, Kyla experienced divorce, financial ruin, child separation, rape and homelessness. At the age of 35. She almost gave up but she wasn't discouraged. Instead, she picked up a pen and she started to write and actually found that writing is her passion. Today, Kyla is the creator of Kyla Nicole, a full service agency that focuses on healing souls and redirecting lives through coaching and equipping businesses by ensuring proper policies are in place. And last but not least, she's helping those who have a story to tell. Tell it to published works. Kyla, welcome to the show how you doing today?

Dr. Kyla Lurry 1:22

I am doing so good.

Acquania Escarne 1:24

Awesome. Before we have deep into your story, I was hoping you could share a little bit more with my listeners about you and how you survived 2013. What were some of your strongest moments? And how did you get through such a difficult year?

Dr. Kyla Lurry 1:40

Oh my goodness, oh, obviously prayer. That definitely was just the saving grace for me. Outside of that it really took me becoming very aware of who I was, redefining my life, rediscovering my call my purpose. And so I feel like I've just kind of made it through that time. By the grace of God, I really feel like it was one of the years where I've done the most self work. And I feel like it definitely paid off.

Acquania Escarne 2:13

I love that. And I love that and the end of that journey, it actually encouraged you to also start a business. So I want you to help people understand not everyone knows what a coach does or whether or not they need one. So please explain to me, what types of services do you provide? And how would someone know that it's time for them to get a coach?

Dr. Kyla Lurry 2:32

That's such a great question. And something that a lot of people ask that come to this moment where they're like, Oh, which one do I need. And I always tell people listen, it's definitely okay to have both. But I do feel like there are key differences between your coach and your therapist, your therapist allowing you to vent and not you guys may or may not come to conclusions, you may or may not actively work on a plan, you may or may not actively get those types of resources or that type of accountability. Oppose to your coaches, I feel like they're going to be more hands on they're going to be, you know, providing you with key tools, resources, and whatever their specific area is for your life. So it's kind of gonna get you over the hump a little bit faster. Opposed to your therapist may guide you into getting to that point, and it just may take a little bit longer. So I kind of break that down for people in general terms. But as for myself, I always tell people listen, I'm the girl where you dug up your box, you unlocked it, you looked in me and you're ready to sort that thing out. If you're someone that still has the box and you're looking for the box, and you're not sure if you want to open it, I might not be you girl might be too strong for you.

Acquania Escarne 3:46

Oh, I love that analogy. And I hope people understand what you're trying to say, because I totally got it. You're the one who's going to push people to make it happen and no longer playing the BS game. So I wanted to ask you when it comes to publishing, I've had a couple of previous episodes where people have talked about self publishing and publishing through a publisher. Do you have a particular preference? And if so, which one and why?

Dr. Kyla Lurry 4:11

I absolutely tell people, they have to do what's best for them. So I'll never negate that. In that respect. I've done it both ways. I have self published my own woks. And I've gone through a publishing company for other words, so I do think it depends on your end game, or what it is specifically that you're looking for. For me, personally, I find that most of my clients have, they're in the same boat that I was in, they've done it both ways. Their season is change. They don't really have the time they don't really want to dedicate to writing the project crafting the project and publishing the project. And so they're looking for a publishing company that's going to be cost effective, but at the same time, provide quality and then there's an ownership piece that we have, we don't take ownership of anybody's published work, because we feel like that's their project. That's their, their craftsmanship. So there are a couple of nuances there. I think that separates me and others. But I think it depends on your end game. I think it depends on your budget and what you're looking for and your goals. But for me, myself, I prefer a publishing company, I want to write the project, and I want to be done with it.

Acquania Escarne 5:22

Excellent. I love that. And I think people don't always think about that. So that's a good perspective. If you had three tips, you could give aspiring authors, what would they be,

Dr. Kyla Lurry 5:33

Oh, three tips. If I could give three tips, the first one would definitely be to know your audience. Know who you're selling to, otherwise, you're going to be very disappointed. That will be my first thing. And then the second tip, I would say is remember, when you're writing your project, you're writing from the perspective of an expert. So this public work that you're putting out, you have to ask yourself, Who is it for? Who is it going to benefit? And what are they going to get from this that they couldn't get from anybody else?. So that will be my second tip. And my last tip would be to constantly talk about your project, constantly talk about your work. A lot of times, authors will release one project and they'll move on to the other project, not recognizing that all of these work should be tied in. They all have a purpose, they all are going to be continuous development for somebody. So always talk about your projects, don't just do it, say I did it and put it on the shelf. Keep that thing going for as long as you can.

Acquania Escarne 6:35

Yes. And if any of you listened to Episode 39, on my podcast with Tiffany grant, you will know what she's saying is so true, because Tiffany talked about how to nail digital marketing, and continuously promoting and projects you create. So I appreciate that guidance. I hope that aspiring writers take note, the next question I have for you, we have a signature question on the podcast because the Purpose of Money is the name of the podcast, I asked all my guests, what are their purposes for money? And how do you plan to use it in your life?

Dr. Kyla Lurry 7:12

Whoo, I love that question. That question is phenomenal. The purpose of money to me, money is a tool. And it's a resource. So I will say that my purpose for money is to be able to be that resource and to be that tool, whether it be for my family, my community, my personal self, or the kingdom. So I would say that's my purpose of money. And then what do I do with it or plan to do with it, of course, create generational wealth. That is something that is big to me, I have mutual investments and IRAs. And I have accounts for my children and funds and life insurance. I have it all because I believe that is something that separates us culturally and it's something that I'd like to bridge as it relates to my family and my immediate family. While, educating other people to do the same.

Acquania Escarne 8:03

I love that answer, especially from someone who sells life insurance and encourages people to get covered and protect and provide for their families every day. Thank you so much, Kyla for being on the show. Before we depart. I want you to please tell my listeners how can they find you?
